Applying for scholarships can be a time-consuming process, especially if you’re determined to take advantage of as many different funding options as possible. However, that hard graft is always worth it in the end, as Shaan Kumar can attest.
Shaan was the lucky recipient of a QS ImpACT scholarship in 2022, and went on to study at IESE Business School. We caught up with Shaan to learn about the impact the scholarship had on his study abroad experience.
How did you hear about the scholarship and why did you apply?
Over the past decade, my career has been dedicated to the social sector, with a focus on quality education, environmental protection, and gender equity. As a young leader advocating for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Asia-Pacific region, I became involved with QS ImpACT early on, around its inception five years ago.
By late 2020, my experiences in a managerial position at a non-profit, though challenging, were immensely rewarding. This role crystallised my desire to move into management and leadership roles, making an MBA a logical step.
I heard about the scholarship from the QS team and was thrilled to learn about the specific scholarships available for MBA programmes. Knowing the high cost of pursuing an MBA abroad, and coming from a non-business background, I anticipated significant financial challenges.
However, discovering the MBA Community Scholarship was a turning point. The scholarship's focus on community service and impact creation resonated deeply with my work and aspirations.
Without hesitation, I applied, recognising that this scholarship uniquely combined my commitment to community service with my ambition to pursue a business degree.
Having now completed my MBA, I appreciate the scholarship even more. It reinforced the idea that business and impact go hand in hand, a principle that IESE also emphasises.
What difference did the scholarship make to your life?
My journey toward attaining a master's degree began seven years ago. In 2017, I was accepted into the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, but financial constraints prevented me from attending.
Letting go of that opportunity was incredibly difficult, but it taught me a crucial lesson about the realities of studying abroad: gaining admission to a top school is only half the battle.
This time, I approached my goal with a more holistic strategy, knowing that financial support would be essential. Without the scholarships I received, including the QS ImpACT scholarship, attending IESE would not have been possible.
I am profoundly grateful that QS ImpACT recognised the value in my story and the work I have accomplished so far.
The scholarship was not only timely and valuable but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of giving back, supporting others, and integrating business with sustainability in my future career.
What were the memorable highlights of your time at IESE?
Studying abroad in Europe has been an incredible experience. Being part of a class of 350 students from over 50 nationalities and diverse professional backgrounds was an incredible privilege that I could not have imagined had I chosen to study back home.
This diversity, combined with IESE's Case Method teaching approach, which encourages sharing problem-solving perspectives, made the experience phenomenal.
Throughout the year, we participated in numerous events, travel treks, and professional treks, where we visited other cities to learn about different work ecosystems and companies (I had the opportunity to go to Amsterdam).
Informal events also played a significant role in fostering class cohesion. The highlight was MultiCulti, our annual and biggest party, where everyone came together to share cultures, food, drinks, and art. This event profoundly expanded my understanding of the world in a short time.
Also, the courses put us in real-world scenarios, pushing us to learn through practical experience. In one, we worked as consultants for an existing company, identifying core problems and developing effective solutions.
IESE offers a wealth of opportunities through its numerous clubs and events. The school hosts some of the largest student-led conferences in Europe, including the Women in Business Conference and the Responsible Business Conference.
I gained invaluable insights from the Diversity and Inclusion conference, where I learned about how different companies address diversity challenges. Additionally, the multiple networking events with companies throughout the year helped me explore various sectors and expand my professional network.

Do you think IESE had a good balance of sustainable topics in its curriculum?
One of the main reasons I chose to apply to and attend IESE was its dual focus on business and social and environmental responsibility.
IESE offers a robust curriculum with an offer of specialisation in sustainability and hosts several outstanding conferences and events, including Global Energy Day and the Energy Trek (which involved visiting energy companies in the Nordics during my first year).
During my time at IESE, I had the opportunity to contribute to and attend these remarkable events as a first-year director in both the Responsible Business Club and the Women in Business Club. These experiences provided invaluable days of learning and networking.
From the outset, I sought a school that would add substantial value to my existing work experience in the development sector, and IESE’s integration of sustainability into the curriculum and its emphasis on responsible citizenship met this criterion.
One key insight I gained from the courses and sessions I attended is that while there is progress, there is also quite a bit of ambiguity surrounding how different environmental challenges should be addressed and measured internationally.
Additionally, efforts to solve one environmental problem can sometimes exacerbate another. Moreover, the lack of standard measurement systems adds to the complexity of addressing environmental issues.
IESE’s focus on sustainability in its curriculum is well-positioned to tackle these issues and is likely to grow. However, there is always more that can be done.
Some ideas here would be to increase hands-on projects and collaborations with companies focused on pioneering sustainability initiatives, or to expand partnerships with global non-profits and businesses committed to sustainable practices. This would offer students more opportunities to engage with leaders in the field to learn of the latest sustainable practices and innovations.
What advice do you have for young people who are applying for their studies today?
Firstly, know who you are and what suits you best. Figure out your ‘why’ for business school or for your master’s degree. The journey is challenging so your ‘why’ will sustain you if or when you are struggling.
There are hundreds of schools you can apply to, but understanding your aspirations and constraints is crucial. For me, IESE was a great fit due to its collaborative culture, the case method approach, a highly diverse class, and a strong focus on sustainability—attributes I prioritised in my search for a school.
Additionally, studying in Europe was important to me, as I wanted to explore the continent, live in a city I enjoy (Barcelona has been incredible), and have a high-quality learning experience that was financially feasible.
Thorough research is essential. Talk to as many students and alumni as you can before you apply to a school, to learn the realities of the day-to-day and ensure you find an environment that supports you to thrive.
Make a repository of ways you envision funding your applications as well as your education when you get in. Make sure you balance your ambitions with practical considerations to ensure a rewarding and sustainable educational journey.
Master’s degrees and MBAs abroad are a very big investment of your time and money so make sure you are focused within your applications and prepared before you arrive.
